A man wearing the US Navy uniform went to the oceanfront in Emerald Isle, North Carolina, on Thursday, in an apparent protest against the town’s restrictions amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The man, who was identified by a witness as a retired US Navy chief, was seen photographed standing in front of a sign that read “LAND OF THE FREE.”

Mike Conner, a longtime resident of Emerald Isle and a surfer, told Insider the retired sailor stood in the waters for about 10 minutes before he was approached by law enforcement officers. Conner said the man was asked to remove himself from the area, but refused the request.

The sailor eventually left the water on his own accord without incident, Conner added.

The man wore the full Navy Service Dress Blue, which is made from wool and is allowed to worn year-round to all official, formal events. The price for the full uniform is well over $300, which includes stitched rank and a service cover.LoadingSomething is loading.

The man in the uniform and the Emerald Isle Police Department did not respond to a request for comment.

Hours after the incident, the town announced it would lift the ban on access on Saturday. Surfers and other residents previously expressed their disapproval by staging protests throughout the area and were “fired up” by the closures, Conner said.

“We’re very happy that Emerald Isle allowed access not just to us swimmers, but to everybody that uses it as a medium for their exercise,” Connor said. “We don’t want our rights stomped all over.”

“Emerald Isle residents and property owners will be able to access the Atlantic Ocean for normal activities, including swimming, surfing, kiting, kayaking, and fishing,” the town said in a statement. “Residents can continue to walk, jog, and sit on the beach strand. All beachgoers must adhere to the current social distancing guidelines.”

At least 24 people in the county tested positive for the coronavirus and two have died as of Friday, officials said, according to WCTI-TV.

Other beaches have begun opening as states have eased their stay-at-home restrictions. In Jacksonville, Florida, crowds were seen gathering at the beach on Friday afternoon. Although recreational activities are being permitted at some of the beaches, sunbathing and other group activities will not be allowed during operational hours.

The Marine Corps is preparing to select a maker for the service’s new tropical uniform for hot and humid climates.

The Marine Corps Tropical Combat Uniform is a rapid-dry, breathable uniform to be worn for prolonged periods in wet, jungle environments as an alternative to the current Marine Corps Combat Utility Uniform and the Marine Corps Combat Boot. This month, Marine Corps Systems Command (MCSC), published a request for proposals to industry to manufacture the uniforms, with plans to get them into troops’ hands by the final quarter of this fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30.

“This new tropical uniform allows Marines to be more comfortable and less fatigued while focusing on the mission at hand,” Lou Curcio, MCSC’s tropical uniform project officer, said in the release.

The tropical uniform effort is a result of the U.S. military’s increased emphasis on the Pacific region in an effort to prepare for a potential war with China. The Army finalized the design for its Improved Hot Weather Combat Uniform last year.

The trousers and blouse of the new uniform will be made of the same 50/50 cotton-nylon blend as the Marine Corps Combat Utility Uniform and features the same camouflage pattern, the release states. The fabric will also be treated with permethrin to provide protection from insects.

The difference is in the weave and weight, resulting in a lighter material that dries more quickly, according to the release.

Hundreds of Marines participated in various user evaluations from June to September 2017 to assess the fit and durability of a prototype tropical uniform that’s designed to dry faster and keep Marines cooler in warm climates, the release adds.

“Many Marines said the [uniform] feels like pajamas, appreciating how lightweight it is,” Curcio in the release. “They also noted how quickly the uniform dries upon getting wet.”

The boots, awarded on a separate contract, are also lightweight, with self-cleaning soles to improve mobility in a tropical environment, the release states. They are more than a pound lighter than the current Marine Corps boot.

Marine Corps Systems Command awarded two contracts in August for up to 140,000 total pairs of tropical boots, according to Monique Randolph, spokeswoman for MCSC.

One contract worth up to $11.1 million went to Atlantic Diving Supply Inc., for up to 70,000 pairs of Rocky brand tropical boots, and a contract worth up to $13.7 million went to Provengo LLC for up to 70,000 pairs of Danner brand tropical boots, Randolph said.

The Corps plans to purchase 70,000 sets of the new tropical uniforms to support the fleet training or operating in tropical climates, the release states, adding that the MCSC procured more than 10,000 sets of blouses and trousers under a manufacturing and development effort.

Based on January 2020 market research and responses to a November 2019 request for information, the Marine Corps estimates it should see a potential cost reduction of up to 60% per uniform, the release adds.

“[The tropical uniform] will bring many advantages during training and combat in tropical environments,” Curcio said in the release. “For all the sacrifices and challenges they endure, Marines deserve a uniform like this one.”

The creator of My Hero Academia knows how to service fans, and he did that today with a special throwback for Mirko and another Pro Hero. The gift came on Twitter after Kohei Horikoshi posted a black-and-white piece he doodled for his followers. The piece focuses on Mirko as well as Hawks, but they do not look like the Pro Heroes we’ve come to love.

No, this is different. The throwback moves away from the present and into a time where these heroes attended school. To be specific, the artwork shows the pair dressed up in their high school uniforms, and the look has got fans geeking out. After all, Horikoshi hasn’t explored these heroes much in the manga, and this first-look at Mirko confirms the heroine has been a spitfire for years now.

After all, the My Hero Academia sketch imagines how Mirko and Hawks looked during their last days in high school. The pair are drawn in their school uniforms which are a staple in Japan. The coordinating looks are plenty adorable, but Mirko makes it even better when she finds a flaw with her skirt.

As you can see above, the heroine is none too happy about her skirt as it has an irregular bump in it. The pleated number doesn’t have a slit for her rabbit tail to slip through, so the appendage is creating the hump. It also makes the skirt rise up in the back, and we can only assume teachers at her school wouldn’t approve of the risqué look.

Of course, Hawks has it a bit earlier. He had to put in slits for his wings as always, but the rest of the uniform suits him. From the lose white shirt to his belted black slacks. Hawks looks as chic as ever, and the look on his face hasn’t changed much. The dour Pro Hero was just as blank back in high school, so it is nice to see a bit more of his teen years. And if we can get more of this content moving forward, that would be perfectly alright with fans everywhere.

What do you think of this throwback piece? Does this uniform suit Mirko? Let me know in the comments or hit me up on Twitter @MeganPetersCB to talk all things comics and anime!

Brittany Cartwright has always had a pep in her step. In a 2017 interview with The Daily Dish, Vanderpump Rules’ Kentucky darling revealed she was a cheerleader from the third grade through college. And now we know where Brittany got her passion for school spirit from: her mama. On Wednesday, April 29, Sherri Cartwright shared a precious throwback photo on Instagram and revealed that she too was a cheer gal just like her daughter. We quickly spotted teenage Sherri standing in the middle of the back row in the group photo. The Kentucky stunner looked fab in a super cute retro cheer uniform featuring a long-sleeve collar shirt emblazoned with a “C” and speakerphone logo and a pleated skirt. Even as a teen Sherri had fierce, defined brows and envy-worthy voluminous dark strands.

“High School Cheerleading Days,” she captioned the snap. “I cheered for the same high school as Tiffany & Brittany,” she revealed, referencing George Rogers Clark High School.

The Cartwright ladies have spirit, yes they do!

WASHINGTON (CNS) — When Tom Shipley, chairman of Dennis Uniform in Portland, Oregon, wondered how to respond to the growing COVID-19 pandemic, the bolts of plaid fabric and sewing machines at the Portland uniform factory that has been in his family for three generations provided an obvious answer.

Amid a growing demand for face masks and the outcry of those in the health care workforce using bandannas or no masks at all, he decided his company could produce masks and donate them to those in the medical profession, using fabric on hand with an interface barrier sewn in.

He can’t remember the exact day he proposed the idea this spring, because for him, like everyone else, the days have blurred into each other. What was clear though is that everyone in the company — union and nonunion employees, executive team and board members — agreed this was the right thing to do.

So, the 100-year-old company, which makes uniforms for 2,500 private schools across the country including hundreds of Catholic schools, put its school uniform production on hold for a few weeks to just make face masks.

“People see the plaid and think that’s cute or funny, but it was all we had. It was out of necessity,” Shipley told Catholic News Service April 17.

To date, they have donated at least 15,000 masks, all with recognizable plaids that are the pattern of many Catholic school jumpers or skirts. Donations have been primarily in the Portland area for starters but requests for more masks has begun.

For now, he said, the masks are not for sale. “We felt strongly that this was not a time for anyone to be opportunist or profit from someone else’s grief or tragedy,” he said, adding that in the future, he was not sure if the masks would end up as part of the school uniform.

One aspect of this work that has been particularly gratifying is how it connects their usual clientele of schoolchildren to an effort to help in this pandemic. “There are thousands of children we serve and a lot of them are confused and wondering ‘what can I do to make a difference, how can I help?'”

[Want to discuss politics with other America readers? Join our Facebook discussion group, moderated by America’s writers and editors.]

“This is their fabric, their uniform, turned into something that could save someone’s life,” he said.

Right now, he added, it is a balance for the company to respond to future uniform needs when schools reopen and to also be “present in this moment and try to do things that are right.”

The company has kept its employees at its Portland factory but has temporarily closed its retail shops across the country. Many uniforms are made on-site, others are made in other locations.

Like many businesses nationwide, the school uniform company is trying to navigate what the months ahead will be like. Shipley doesn’t know if sales will decrease because people will be buying less or if private school enrollments will go down and impact sales.

What he does know is that his company has had a tradition of adapting to the times and helping out when there have been needs such as during World War II when Dennis Uniform made Red Cross uniforms and supplied towels and linens to military personnel shipping out of the Portland.

His father, the second generation in the family business, is now 92 and wearing one of the Dennis Uniform masks.

Shipley said his entire career has been in school uniforms and 60% to 65% of the company’s business is with Catholic schools. Although he is not Catholic, he is often asked if he is and said he is proud of the diverse group the business serves.

What the company is doing now, he said, gives everyone associated with it a lot of pride “knowing we are doing something no one else is doing permeates throughout every person involved with this program.”
